The Different Types of Jobs in Marketing

Some graduates know exactly what area of Marketing they want to specialise in, for others it can be a challenging decision. There are so many areas in Marketing that it is sometimes confusing and difficult to choose the right career path. In this article we will discuss the different areas of Marketing, the responsibilities you would have in each role and the salary expectations. If you are undecided and unsure about what is involved in specific marketing roles, then hopefully this article will clarify some questions about the specific roles you are interested in.

  1. Marketing Assistant

This will be the first marketing job for most graduates, but what exactly does a marketing assistant do? The exact definition of the role is to support the work of marketing managers and executives by completing a variety of tasks including monitoring marketing campaigns,  conducting market research and competitor analysis, creating marketing content and other daily administrative tasks to ensure the smooth running of the company’s marketing department. The average salary for a marketing assistant in Ireland with -1 to 4 years’ experience is between €25,000 to €35,000.  (This information was collected from our 2019 survey in conjunction with Alternatives and received over 1,000 responses.) This role is very broad and allows you to test out different areas of marketing before choosing an area to specialise in, which is useful if you are undecided.

  1. Content Creator

If you love designing and writing content, then a Content Creator could be the right career path for you. The role requires you to create a variety of multimedia content for the company’s website and social media, this can include articles, videos, infographics, eBooks, and social media posts.  Other responsibilities would include monitoring and implementing insights, content strategies and managing online community growth.  The average salary for a content creator in Ireland with -1 to 4 years’ experience is €30,000 to €40,000, after five to nine years the national average salary increases from €40,000 up to €60,000.

  1. Digital Marketing

A Digital Marketer is typically responsible for engaging a brand with customers online, this is one of the most popular areas in marketing right now. Their main goal is to establish and manage the business’ online presence. Depending on the size of the company a digital marketers’ responsibilities can vary with tasks such as tracking the company’s overall online performance, competitor analysis, content creation and campaign management. If you choose to specialise in digital marketing, then you can expect to earn between €30,000 to €40,000 with 1 to 4 years’ experience. The average salary for someone with 5 to 9 years of experience in digital marketing is €40,000 to €65000.

  1. Event Marketer

Event marketing is used to promote a product, brand, or service by organising an in-person or online event to connect with consumers on a personal level. An Event Marketers responsibilities include, liaising with suppliers, organising sponsorship, working with graphic designers to develop promotional material, budget planning, updating event pages on the company website and assisting in digital marketing campaigns to promote the event. The national average entry level salary for Event Marketers is between €28,000 to €40,000 and once they have over 5 years’ experience, they could earn between €30,000 –  €50,000.

  1. SEO and PPC Specialist.

Both SEO and PPC are part of Search Engine Marketing. PPC is the paid ads you see at the top of your search results and SEO are the actions taken to reach the top spot on the search results organically for targeted keywords. This role is generally seen in larger companies, responsibilities would include analysing websites for any areas that can be improved, tracking analytics, running PPC campaigns with Google AdWords, writing effective SEO content for online platforms, keyword research, monitoring PPC budget, adjusting bids for better ROI , tracking KPI’S and writing up reports. SEO and PPC specialists with 5 to 9 years’ experience usually earn between €40,000 to €60,000.

  1. Public Relations

The objective of Public Relations is to generate publicity and promote the company. A PR campaign might focus on getting the business coverage on television, radio, newspapers, magazines, or blogs. The job would include tasks such as writing press releases, statements and speeches, developing communication plans for the organizations message, for example the launch of a new product, organising promotional events such as tours, press conferences and exhibitions, and analysing the company’s media coverage on social platforms. Once you have 5 to 9 years’ experience you could be earning between €55,000 to €80,000.

  1. Brand Management

Brand management is the management of the company’s preferred public image. Marketing is the individual actions taken to build your company’s brand, whereas branding is the company’s overall story and preferred image that they are trying to portray to the public. Responsibilities in a branding role include determining objectives and strategies, market research, presenting creative ideas for marketing, help develop and optimize marketing campaigns, co-ordinate sales and managing various marketing teams. An Assistant Brand Manager with 1 to 4 years’ experience could earn €35,000 to €45,000 and a Brand Manager can earn between €40,000 to €60,000.

  1. Marketing Data Analyst

A Marketing Data Analyst examines data to provide key insights to a company about the products or services they provide. They use various online tools such as Google Analytics, to track market size, trends, growth rate, profitability, opportunity, and key success factors. Starting off, a Data Analyst could earn between €35,000 to €45,000 and after 5 years’ experience their salary could increase to between €45,000 to €60,000. Sometimes this role requires you to know some coding languages such as Python and MySQL to handle very large data sets, for smaller companies you just need good working knowledge of excel.
